If your C Drive is Full and you’re wondering how to clear space in C Drive. I’ll share step by step guide on how to free maximum space in C Drive.
There are times when your C Drives storage gets nearly Full. This irritates users a lot. Because then users are not able to install new huge programs into C Drive. This also creates other performance issues as well making your PC Slow. So Today I’ll discuss How you can clear your C Drive to maximum level.
First of all Let me shed some light on why space of C Drive keeps getting full. There are couple of reasons for this.
Steps To Clear Space in Full C Drive
Step 1: Make Sure You have Secondary Drive
Some users forget to create additional drive during windows installation. There Window and files are all being stored in C Drive. Obviously this is a big problem. Ideally your WIndow Drive should be separate and your Data Drive should be separate for saving personal files. This technique comes handy when you want to switch Operating System. Then you don’t need to backup all files from your computer. All you have to do is simply format C Drive and Clean install Fresh OS.
But what if you haven’t created that additional drive and your data is making C Drive Full. Well there are couple of partition tools available which can be used to resize C Drive and then you can create additional Drive and can cut paste data from C Drive.
Step 2: Clean C Drive Using CCleaner – Easy Approach
Well if you are not technically advanced user then you can follow an easy approach to Clear a lot of junk from C Drive. Simply install CCleaner which is widely used to clear junk files from C Drive. You can easily grab this tool from Google. But if you have already tried this then keep reading on to follow next steps.
Step 3: Check Your Default Download Locations
If you are using IDM or some other download tool make sure to check that on which location it is saving your downloads. Because the default storage path is C Drive. Sometimes even after clearing junk files the space again starts consuming. In that case newly download files can be culprit. You should change the download directory settings in your download manager.
Step 4: Make Sure to Clear Hibernate File if Hibernation is Enabled
This once happened with me. I struggled a lot to clear C Drive space but was unable to do so. Finally the culprit was hibernate sys file which windows create to store your data upon hibernation. Those who don’t know in hibernation windows copies all your running programs status from memory and copy them on hard disk so that even after power off the computer can recover all running programs and place them in ram from hard disk.
So the file in which window save this gets huge and huge depending upon the concurrent running ptograms upon hibernation. You can see this file from Safe mode of windows by enabling the show hidden files feature.
NOTE: After deleting this file you won’t be able to restore the previously running programs and your PC will boot like fresh reboot.
Step 5: Disable Windows Protection From Advanced Settings
In your windows advanced settings, under protection tab you can see that Windows allocated some percentage to Protection settings. For me this is just useless. Because when things go wrong and window crashes nothing is going to help me. This protection is the System Restore Image which Window continuously creates using checkpoints.
I think this space reserve is useless. I always disable this protection upon clean install of window and still the PC runs smoothly and my friends never complained. There window still looks fresh after years of use.
Step 6: Use Tree Size Tool to Track the Large Culprits
Well if nothing has helped you so far. Then I think there is something else going on in your C Drive. To find out this you need to install TreeSize Software which builds a tree of folders based on their size. This helps you to easily navigate to folder saving enormous space. This enabling you to delete files which are not necessary. Ultimately you will be able to clear maximum space from C Drive.
These above steps helped me a lot to recover hidden space from C Drive on multiple friends PC. The success rate is 100%. If you are still not able to free up some space after checking all steps. Then please comment here and we’ll work out on this together.
